The historic part of Yaroslavl, which is a World Heritage site (UNESCO), is located at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosi Rivers. It is one of the Golden Ring cities, a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in Russian history. Founded in 1010 it was proceeded by viking sites from the 8th and 9th centuries.

The men were fishing on the Kotorosi River where the ice was more than half a metre thick and the water below about 3 to 4 metres deep. They kept warm by drinking vodka of which I was given a cup full to drink and a pie to take the taste of the vodka away. The temperature at the time was -12C.

We left Yaroslavl about 5 pm to catch the 6pm overnight train to Velikiy Usturg. Initially I had a 4-berth sleeping compartment to myself but was joined for part of the way by a man and lady, both Russian, so there was little conversation between us. The carriage attendant gave me a sealed bag with a towel, duvet cover, pillow case and mattress cover to make up my own bed. There had to be returned to her when leaving the train.
